Gobi Desert Camel Trek Mongolia

Gobi Desert camel trek Mongolia Bactrian camels

This Gobi Desert camel trek Mongolia takes you across one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes — 8 days riding Bactrian camels through vast sand dunes, ancient dinosaur fossil sites and the red sandstone cliffs of the Mongolian Gobi. You travel with Trinity Adventure Mongolia in a small private group, staying with nomadic herder families in traditional gers under the clearest night skies on earth.

Why Choose This Gobi Desert Camel Trek in Mongolia?

The Gobi Desert is Mongolia’s most iconic landscape — 1.3 million square kilometres of steppe, desert and mountain terrain. Our Gobi Desert camel trek Mongolia goes beyond the tourist trail. You ride two-humped Bactrian camels alongside real Mongolian herders, sleep in family gers far from any road, and experience the silence of a desert that feels like another planet.

Unlike bus-based tours, this is a riding journey. Every morning you saddle up and head deeper into the Gobi, following ancient caravan routes across sandy plains and gravel flats. This is one of the most authentic ways to explore southern Mongolia.

8-Day Gobi Desert Camel Trek Mongolia — Itinerary Overview

Day 1 — Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad: Fly or drive south to the Gobi capital. Transfer to your first nomadic ger camp.

Day 2 — Yol Valley (Eagle Valley): Explore the stunning ice canyon through the Gurvan Saikhan mountain range. Meet your camels and begin orientation with local herders.

Day 3 — Bayanzag — The Flaming Cliffs: Walk the red sandstone cliffs where dinosaur fossils were first discovered. The late afternoon light turns the cliffs a spectacular burning orange — one of the most photographed landscapes in Mongolia.

Day 4–5 — Khongor Sand Dunes camel trek: The heart of your Gobi Desert camel trek Mongolia. Spend two full days riding Bactrian camels across Mongol Els, the singing sand dunes. Camp at the base of the dunes and climb them at sunset for panoramic desert views.

Day 6 — Nomadic family stay: Spend a full day living with a Mongolian herder family — milking camels and goats, learning to make airag (fermented mare’s milk), and joining daily life on the steppe.

Day 7 — Open desert riding: Final camel ride across the open Gobi gravel plains. Reflect on the week’s journey over dinner under the stars.

Day 8 — Return to Ulaanbaatar: Transfer back to Dalanzadgad for your flight home.

What to Expect on a Gobi Camel Trek

Bactrian camels are gentle, steady animals — far more comfortable than horses for long desert crossings. You ride for 3–5 hours each day at a relaxed walking pace, with regular stops for water, photography and rest. No previous riding experience is needed. Our local guides are experienced camel handlers who will have you comfortable in the saddle within the first hour.

Accommodation throughout is in traditional Mongolian gers — circular felt tents that are warm at night and cool during the day. Meals are prepared fresh by your host families: hearty Mongolian dishes of tsuivan (fried noodles), khuushuur (meat pastries), fresh dairy and Gobi-brewed tea.
